4k anamorphic music video shot on 5d
Hi! Here is the no budget music video I shot for my sister. Even though it is no budget production it came out quite nice. She is very talented singer and music composer so check it out.
Regarding the production...The whole crew was me and my wife. She made a great makeup for the talents.
I used 5d mark III with 85mm 1.8 lens and compact isco anamorphic adapter which gave me the true CinemaScope with all anamorphic aesthetics coming along.
The video was shot in two evenings on one lens. Due to no budget nature of the production there are many flaws that as the professional I would be ashamed of if I had necessary resources that I usually have when shooting TVCs. I used two 64gb SanDisk cards which can take 1920 4:3 ratio at 25 fps. I haven't had any lights so I shaped and manipulated natural light, that was a lot of pain...
The post production was flawless. I took the shot material at a studio I work, so I had all post production toys at my finger tips. Since it is not good to work on a personal projects during the work time I worked during late evenings and weekends.
MLV files were converted with custom in-house python app that at core uses ML's mlvdump. I wrote the app my self some time ago. The first draft version of the app can be found on this forum, it is available as a source code, since that time it consolidated quite a bit, but I haven't updated it on the forum.
The finishing was done in 4K in Resolve system on a professional cinema grade ref monitor. After unsqueezing the anamorphic material it naturally becomes 4k, and it doesn't loose any quality since all the range of details which was compressed horizontally now becomes normal. The unsqueezed 4k raw anamorphic video looked really amazing. Seen all kinds of footage from all kinds of pro digital film cameras on the reference monitor i can say that ML video holds up well. For the final output I sampled video to 1080p keeping the original CinemaScope style ratio.

Thanks! Pulling focus isn't hard, but it takes some practice. Once you get used to it, it takes couple of seconds.
Rack focusing is possible too but with some assistance.

Hi, Mira! ML doesn,t shoot 4k, but with help of good anamorphic lens you can pull out quite decent 4k image.

I would probably have pulled the exposure down atleast one stop, but that's just me.
Like the video, it simple and does the trick. Would be nice with an extra scene to pull shots from but all in all, good work.

hi Viktor! Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it! I wish I had more shots to edit in, but having only two 64gb cards and 3 hours before the sun goes behind the horizon I was in a strict time constraints. Basically all the footage I shot, went into the edit! And while editing I was constantly feeling that I need to put in more stuff, but I just did not have enough material... I was lucky that my sister could start playing and singing from any note of the song, that helped to save up CF memory and time, otherwise I would have to redo the whole verse. Thanks again!

I wonder why do people continue to shoot on magic lantern and Canon, this is a dinosaur technology. Your video would look much better if you shot it on GH4, which is a true 4K camera.

Well, probably because he HAS a 5D an not a GH4...right? How on earth will you ever make a video if you don't use the stuff you have but instead keep dreaming of newer gear....

Very nicely done. The anamorphic looks excellent, and the moment I saw the video I thought it looked like where I have visited in KG. Was it shot in KZ? What a beautiful area of the world. I think that you used the available light quite well. Congrats!

Einar, I spend the majority of my time in KG, Bishkek area. I visited Almaty a couple times in the late 90s, then again in the late 00s. It had changed so dramatically in that time! I was not part of the Marco Polo series, I will have to check that out. I was out there for business and academics. I spent a lot of time in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, camping and snowboarding. It is a beautiful part of the world that is often overlooked.

Nice video, it does look good.
I'm curious about your 4k workflow.
On the ML site it states the max res for continuous record up to 30fps is 1920 x 1080.
You claim to record at 1920 at 4:3 which = 1920 x 1440.
That would give you a 4k resolution of 3840 x 1440 when you unsqueeze the X2 anamorphic.
This would be great, except, as stated by ML, you can't record 4:3 at 25fps at 1920.
Can you please clarify with the correct information, as otherwise it's misleading.
Or correct me if I'm wrong.
Someone on the ML forum claims the max 4:3 resolution for 5D mkIII raw is 1600 x 1200. That would give you a 3200 X 1200 final image which is good but still sub 4k.
Or maybe your anamorphic is not X 2?
Can you post a link to a .dng or high quality jpeg of one of the 4k frames? I'd love to see the quality. This is the only way we can determine the validity of the title of your post since downsampling to 1080p for final output doesn't tell us anything about the captured quality of the image and wether it would make a viable alternative to 4k cameras.

hi, Lance! Thanks! Those are quite nerdy mathematical questions you've got! I can't operate with the exact numbers as I don't have my 5d around. As far as I remember I was recording at multiple resolutions: 1920x12xx,1920x4xx and at native true 3.5k. If you look carefully there are plenty of shots with slow motion. Those were recorded at 1920 50 fps. And what is truly amazing is that the video was optically unsqueezed in camera! Because ML vertically squeezes 50 fps, the lens applies the reverse effect,so no post unsqueezing is required when shooting 50fps, kinda cool. I'am not saying I shot the music video in one continues take, consider that please... And most importantly... I don't claim that this is an alternative to any real 4k camera! After all it is not about resolution and numbers, it is about music video that I made for my sister! I'am not trying to mislead someone or sell to you my 5d under 4k sauce, it is all about making good pictures... Come on man, let's enjoy being the creators! By the way, I've got one question too though: Who do you refer when saying "we" and "us"? Is it Title Validation Control Bureau or 4K Quality Control Association? Or just people who watch the music video and don't care much about all those figures you wrote above?

Hi, Wentworth! That is a very good advice you gave me! I'am glad that I inspired you shooting anamorphic! It is a lot of fun! Just consider if you go with anamorphic attachment focusing may be hard, you would be limited with lens choice and if you attach it not precisely you'll have skewing and horizon lines bending.
