When RED announced the Komodo a few years back, it came in the company's trademarked white color. Now, Aputure is following suit with a white version product of its own.
Aputure has announced a white edition of the amaran COB 60x. The limited edition release is cloaked in a full matte white Colorway finish on the body and a full-sized Bowens mount, just like the original design. Outside of gaining style points, there really isn’t anything new about this light, so let's take a trip down memory lane to see what the 60x offers.
Accurate, Bright, and Fun
The white edition of the amaran COB 60x will have the same 65W bi-color output with ≥96 CRI/TLCI scores, 85 SSI tungsten scores, and an SSI (D56) score of 74. The light has a color CCT range of 2700-6500K, and emits 37775 lux at one meter with the reflector dish attached.
The reflector is also designed to cast a 15-degree beam angle. If it's anything like the one that comes with the regular 60 series, then you will have a hotspot in the center. So, keep that in mind. Without the reflector, the bare bulb beam angle is 120 degrees. For brightness, adjustments can be made at 1 percent increments from 0 percent to 100 percent.
Nine lighting effects are also included, including Paparazzi, Fireworks, Lightning, Faulty Bulb, TV, Pulse, Strobe, Explosion, and Fire. In addition, it can be wirelessly controlled using the Sidus Link mobile app.
Sipping Power
The maximum power output for this light will be 65 watts with 76 watts of power consumption through an AC power supply. For reference, that's about the same as an old-school tungsten blub, but the 60x can be battery-powered. This can be done with either an included Sony NP-F battery plate, or via a D-Tap to 5.5mm DC cable attached to a strong enough battery. To keep it cool, the 60x is kept cool through an ultra-quiet active cooling system. If it's anything like the 60D, you'll barely be able to hear it.
Compact Design
Extremely compact and light, the white amaran 60x COB has the same size dimensions as its other siblings (11.7" x 11.1" x 11.1") while weighing only 1.49 pounds (675g). Via the Bowens mount, the unit can be paired with literally any compatible light modifier, especially if you get creative with the rigging. The Aputure Light Dome SE, Light Dome Mini II, and Aputure Lantern are popular solutions.
The light comes with the white amaran COB 60x light, Bowens Mounted Hyper mini reflector, a dual NP-F battery plate for 5.5mm DC barrel attachment, Bowens mounted protection cover, AC power supply, 13' (4m) EC C13 AC Power Cable, a 1/2-20 Mounting Pin with stand adapter, and a pretty nice carrying case.
Pricing and Availability
The limited edition white amaran COB 60x LED Video Light has a retail price of $199 and is available starting January 26th, 2023 exclusively from the Aputure website.
No third-party retail listings are planned, even from authorized retailers. To quote Aputure, once they’re sold out, they’re gone. So, get your orders in if you like that bold white matte finish.
While this isn't something you'll need to get, it's a pretty-looking piece of kit to have. If that's something you want, then don't sleep on the White Edition 60x.
