What would movies be if it weren’t for the people who actually photograph them? Audiobooks?
The American Society of Cinematographers is once again set to honor the work of the many masters of the moving image. On Monday, the ASC unveiled its 37th annual ASC Award nominations, which celebrates the year’s best in feature film, documentary, and television cinematography.
Being recognized within your craft by your peers would be exciting for anyone, but it’s also a good marker of who might take home the Cinematography Academy Award on March 12. Many of the ASC Award winners have gone on to win Best Cinematography at the Academy Awards, with 17 of the ASC award winners taking home the Oscar in the last 36 years.
Greig Fraser, who last year won both the ASC Theatrical Feature Film award and the Oscar for Dune, is nominated again this year for The Batman.
Mandy Walker is now the third woman ever to be nominated in the ASC feature film category for her work on Elvis. While no woman has ever won the Cinematography Oscar, at the very least a nomination for Walker is now looking good.
Roger Deakins scores his 17th nomination for Empire of Light. It will be Deakins' sixth ASC Award if he wins, which puts him one award above Emmanuel Lubezki for the record.
Also nominated in the feature category are Darius Khondji for Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths and Claudio Miranda for Top Gun: Maverick.
