Sony shooters are getting all sorts of love this summer, and for Deals of the Week, we found some great deals.
With the Sony FX3 now officially Netflix-approved and some new APS-C zooms recently brought to market, Sony is having a nice couple of months. But now with the summer heat in full swing, a bunch of sales on Sony gear are making things even hotter.
Here's what we found!
Sony a7R IVA Mirrorless Camera
The Sony a7R IVA moves shooters into the realm of super high resolution with a back-illuminated design full-frame 61MP Exmor R CMOS sensor. It offers incredible resolution with high clarity, low noise, and a wide 15-stop dynamic range. While it's made mainly for still photography, its video performance is nothing to scoff at, making it a very versatile camera.
This fourth edition of the a7R sees the inclusion of an updated 61MP sensor along with faster processing, improved AF performance, and a more well-rounded feature-set for both high-end photo and video applications. The Sony a7R IVA also has an updated Fast Hybrid AF system that employs a combination of 567 phase-detection points and 425 contrast-detection areas for reliable and quick autofocus and subject tracking performance. For video, creatives have internal recording op[tions in UHD 4K with multiple frame rates up to 30 fps using the full width of the sensor. Oversampled 4K recording is also possible, which uses a 6K capture area with a Super 35 crop for greater detail.
Sony FE GM Lens
For those in need of Sony lenses, we have two solid zooms and a super fast prime. The Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM lens offers an ultra-wide field of view and is characterized by an impressively bright and versatile design. It's ideal for landscape, nature, architecture, and interior applications. With a constant aperture of f/2.8 and advanced optical design, it's a solid choice for working in difficult shooting conditions.
The Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM is the sister lens of the ultra-wide zoom and provides a fast, standard zoom with an equal amount of versatility. Finally, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM lens is a classic wide-angle prime with an updated, sleek form factor with a speedy f/1.4 max aperture, making it an excellent choice for low-light scenes. Both zooms come with Sony's Nano AR Coating to reduce surface reflections, flares, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
Sony ECM-W1M Wireless Mic
Finally, we have the Sony ECM-W1M Wireless Microphone, which, according to reviews, could be hit-or-miss. But when it hits, this little accessory is a robust addition to your toolkit, especially if you're doing quick interviews for documentaries or digital content. It's designed specifically for Sony cameras and camcorders that feature the proprietary Multi-Interface Shoe and is comprised of two components—a transmitter and a receiver. They communicate wirelessly with each other using Bluetooth technology and feature a range of up to 100', depending on conditions.
With the receiver attached to your camera, it is still possible to capture additional audio using the camera's built-in microphone. In addition, audio picked up by the camera can be relayed back to the transmitter. The transmitter features a headphone jack that allows the camera operator to communicate with the person wearing the transmitter by speaking into the camera's microphone. There is also a headphone jack on the receiver so that the camera operator can monitor audio even if the camera itself doesn't provide a headphone out of its own.
Honorable Mention—Sony PMW-F5 Digital Cinema Camera
While it's not a new camera, we couldn't skip putting this workhorse on our list. While this Sony F5 is a refurbished model, it still has enough punch to tackle any project you throw at it. It features an 8.9 MP Super35 image sensor capable of capturing 2K and HD internally in Sony's XAVC codec onto SxS PRO+ memory cards and 4K and 2K RAW to an optional Sony AXS-R5 external recorder. It features 14 stops of dynamic range, applicable to both RAW and XAVC recording as long as S-Log is turned on, for truly film-like rendering of highlights and shadows.
The camera natively features an FZ mount and includes a PL-mount adapter. Out of the box, the F5 records 2K and HD up to 59.94p in XAVC. With the latest firmware updates installed, it will be able to record 4K RAW from 1p to 60p and 2K RAW from 1p to 240p to an AXS-R5 recorder, as well as 1080p 4:2:2 from 1 to 180 fps internally in XAVC. It will also be able to record SStP SR at 4:4:4 internally when you select RGB mode at 440 Mb/s instead of YUV 4:2:2.
All RAW recording is in 16-bit. Compared to the other camera on this list, the F5 is a leviathan made specifically for high-end productions.
