How to Edit RED Raw Footage in FCPX?
Hi!
I just directed my second short film this week, and we were fortunate enough to shoot on a RED 8K Helium. I edited my first short in Final Cut Pro X and I would love to do the same thing with this piece, but I feel like the workflow for editing RED footage is above my technical proficiency. Any thoughts on how I would go about editing using that footage? Basically, I don't want to ruin the great looking images we captured by messing up something in transcoding, etc. Thanks peeps!

There is a plug in that you can download to be able to work with RAW footage in FPCX, but I found that in performance is far from perfect. It would be a great idea to generate proxy files inside NLE so you can edit fluently and work with RAW once you get to the Color stage. I personally found that DaVinci Resolve (even the free version) is way more suitable and quick when working with RED Footage. Just make sure to debayer at 1/4 or 1/8 resolution when editing. Perhaps setting up DaVinci could seem to be a little more complicated but again, I found this so much powerful and flexible than FCPX (and FCPX is my main NLE for my work).

In addition to what Ulises said, if you choose not to go with proxies I’d recommend that you edit using pretty fast hard drives-Like a RAID or SSD. Even a usb-c spinning 7200rpm hard drive gives not optimal performance playing back 8k r3ds at lower res.
