We Just Found the Hybrid Camera of Your Dreams—On Sale

The holidays are here, and cameras are officially on sale. For our Deals of the Day, we found some of the largest sensors made for cinema and video.

Larger format cinematography is all the rage these days, even if ARRI and Fuji are making some killer Super/APS-C 35 cameras. But with the holidays come sales, and we've found three cameras that would fit any creative's dreams.

Whether you're a hybrid shooter, focusing solely on cinematography, or are looking for a Netflix-approved camera, we have you covered. 

FUJIFILM GFX 100S

The Fujifilm GFX 100S is a hybrid camera and isn't really made for cinema, but with ProRes RAW capabilities via an Atomos Recorder, it gets dang close. It has one of the biggest sensors for the money that shoots movie-quality footage.

The only thing bigger is the ARRI Alexa 65, which you can only rent. The 102MP 44 x 33mm BSI CMOS sensor offers ultra-high resolution for stills and impressive 4K video recording options. Photographers get 16-bit images, while cinematographers get DCI and UHD 4K video recording at 4:2:0 10-bit internally, 4:2:2 10-bit via HDMI, or 12-bit RAW externally. An F-log gamma setting can also be used for more advanced color grading during post-production. Beyond high-resolution shooting, the unique sensor design also incorporates a sophisticated hybrid AF system that features 425 selectable phase-detection points, which cover nearly the entire frame, and aid with precise face and eye-detection modes.

Canon EOS R5 C

While the Canon R5 C is marketed as a hybrid camera, its video features make it a killer option for videographers, drone camera operators, and creatives who need professional photo still and cinema video production. The R5 C enhances several features in comparison to its siblings, the R5 and C70, including 4K120 recording, HDMI RAW output, Canon Log 3 HLG/PQ support, unlimited recording time, a timecode port, Dual Pixel CMOS AF with eye detection, an active cooling system, a high-power LP-E6NH battery, 13 reassignable buttons, and a multi-function shoe for XLR adapters.

The camera also retains the reliable features of those cameras, such as Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, footage compatibility with DaVinci Resolve and Canon apps, an electronic RF mount, CFexpress/SD card slots, a similar button layout, and more. The EOS R5 C is also moisture and dustproof to the same level as its cinema cousin, the EOS C70. And all this is packed into a tiny 1.7 lb body that is just asking to become your go-to drone camera. It's a workhorse tool that won't disappoint. 

Panasonic Lumix S1H

This is the only camera on our list that is Netflix-approved. That could be super important to you or mean absolutely nothing. From our perspective, any camera on the Netflix list would be more than capable of handling any production needs you throw at it. The full-frame 24.2MP CMOS sensor of the Panasonic S1H affords versatile performance to suit both video and stills, with a broad 14-stop dynamic range, sensitivity from ISO 100-51200, and adept processing to realize high color accuracy, responsive recording, and a broad array of video capabilities. Using nearly the full sensor, 3:2-format 6K24p video recording is supported, along with 16:9 5.9K30p and both DCI and UHD 4K60p settings with internal 4:2:2 10-bit sampling or external raw recording capabilities with a compatible recorder.

Inspired by broadcast cameras, the S1H also uses the updated sensor design to provide Dual Native ISO settings that prioritize either low noise or low sensitivity to realize image quality with greater color fidelity and reduced noise. 

GoPro HERO11 Black (Honorable Mention)

With the new GoPro HERO11 Black just released, we couldn't help but put it on our list. With improved digital features, a 27MP image sensor, and Wi-Fi capabilities, the GoPro HERO11 Black is the quintessential action camera and can capture dynamic POV video up to 5.3K60. The upgraded image sensor can capture 27MP still photos as well as 5.3K60 and 2.7K240 video. GoPro's HyperSmooth 5.0 digital stabilization ensures your footage remains high-quality and features horizon lock technology to ensure your videos are lined up properly.

While it doesn't have a sensor as big as the other cameras on this list, it's the only one that can jump out of a plane, into the ocean, and ride a wave right out of the box.
