Micro Four Thirds shooters have a new 2x macro lens to consider.
Venus Optics, the company behind the brand Laowa, has introduced a 50mm F2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO lens that's designed for Micro Four Thirds camera sensors. The release comes on the heels of its first cine zoom, the Laowa OOOM 25-100mm T2.9.
The 50mm joins Laowa's extensive line of macro lenses that includes focal length options for 15, 25, 60, 65, 100, and the unique 24mm Macro Probe lens. It features an apochromatic (APO) with three glass elements to correct chromatic aberrations and can focus from infinity to 2x macro magnification. Optically, the lens structure is made from 14 element in 10 groups with a 7-blade aperture design that produces a 14-point star effect. More importantly, the minimum focusing distance of the lens is 5.3" (13.5 cm), which allows you to get fairly close to your subject.
The lens is also equipped with an CPU chip and motor that allows the aperture to be controlled by the camera body. All the lens data is directly recorded to the EXIF. The chips also triggers the focus magnifier for easier focus when the focus ring is rotated. It's important to note that this is a manual focus lens with an internal focus ring.
If you happen to be a wildlife shooter or are looking for a solid portrait lens with a 100mm equivalent on a 35mm sensor, the Laowa 50mm F2.8 Ultra Macro APO is worth considering. It measures 3.1” (79mm) long and weighs around 8.4oz (240g). Price is set at $399 USD. It's available now.
