Have to share a quick thought here.... I love nfs and the podcast (I'm an active listener and have learned so much over the years). I don't usually comment but had to share my disappointment with the lack of care (and maybe thought?) in covering the removal of the terms "slavery" and "master" in tech jargon. The fact that these things were talked about a bit too casually, and even laughed off multiple times, represents a bunch of white privilege behind the mic. Also riding off Michelle's comment (who I greatly look up to as a woman in the industry) about removing "male/female parts" from tech jargon by saying (paraphrasing) "let's get this thing handled and then we'll deal with male/female later". Remember that intersectionality is a thing and there are poc, and women AND WOMEN POC who have had to endure the use of these terms. It's important, especially for people with a platform, to seriously look at all of the little (and not so little) things that have made this industry difficult for many women & poc and to know how to talk about them. I know this was a small bit of an overall great podcast but in light of the recent social awakening, it seemed necessary to be said. I love you all at nfs, plz keep doing your thing and also remember you have an influence on us youngsters in the biz.

Rachel,
You are perpetuating what I call the “butt-hurt generation”. There is no such thing in 2020 as “white privilege”, “manslaining”, a “cis-male”, a “latinx” or any other term the “woke” have created to marginalize the aforementioned.
Please stop telling people what language they can and can’t use. These are just words. They don’t prevent people from being hired. The male goes into the female. That’s biology, which makes it easy to remember. The male side of a piece of film equipment has no more importance than the female piece of equipment. The words “slave” “master” pre-date slavery. So why is that offensive to you??
Otherwise, If these words offend you then consider another profession but please stop being offended by nonsense. There’s plenty of things in the world to be offended about.

Getting offended by equipment names and terms is a bit trivial, but saying there is no such thing as "white privilege" is nonsense as well. Just because you haven't become Steven Spielberg, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Every race has a privilege depending on the setting so there’s just as much “white privilege” as there is “Indian Privilege” or “Chinese Privilege” so therefore they cancel each other out. But you seem to be an expert on “white privilege” so I’d love to know where one can cash in this “privilege”?
BTW, try traveling abroad in South America and not paying more if you’re white. Is that a “privilege”?

Hi Rachel,
Thank you for your comment, and your kind words about the podcast both in general and specifically about Michelle who we also think quite highly of. This is a really good point, and I take it to heart and we will discuss it on the next podcast. 'Youngsters' have an influence on all of us as well and in this case a very good one. Thanks for speaking up, and helping us all see more ways to grow and change.

Rachel,
Thank you for listening to our podcast and for sharing this with us. You're right: to only address one singular pairing or to prioritize one set of words to address over the other certainly does not take intersectionality into account. In fact, the act of prioritizing them at all may come from an office/white male dominant cultural norm. There are definitely compounded layers that BIPOC women have had to face in the film industry and beyond. We would be remiss if we didn't use this platform to help address the inequities, difficulties, and microaggressions our colleagues in the business are currently facing. Thank you for the comment and the push.

Don’t bow down to the cancel culture mob, Michelle. You guys didn’t do anything wrong.
The world will never content for them. They will continue to find something to be offended about.

Pointing out that we neglected to have a diversity conversation is not the same as cancel culture. We would be doing a disservice to our industry if we didn't acknowledge the very real diversity and equity issues within it and the complexities at play.

It's interesting how you say your 5D Mark II overheated and managed record times of 20 minutes. I shot a Catholic wedding ceremony (about two hours long) with a 5D Mark II but it never overheated on me. I would record for about 10 minutes and after the camera saved the file (maybe 6 seconds) I was able to start the video recording again. It was, and still is, an impressive DSLR with amazing video capabilities. I think they even shot the season finale of House with the 5D Mark II.
