Someone please explain frame rates to me.

Hi all. So I have basic information about frame rates in video. What I want to know is, why do I have different frame rate options for my timeline?

What happens if I drop 25fps footage in a 50fps timeline and vice versa? What happens if 120fps footage is in a 8fps timeline? I have always worked in a 50fps timeline and film almost everything in 50fps incase I want to half time it. Is that a stupid way to work?

This is basic information but it's pretty extensive to talk about. You should really google it and study up because frame rates are super tricky. I assume you're in Europe if you're shooting 25fps and 50fps. You should learn about pull downs and that certain mismatched framerates can cause dropped/duplicate frames.

Here's an article that explains some stuff.

If I just drop the 50fps onto a 25fps timeline, it will play full speed unless I slow it to 50%

Frame rate is the amount of individual video frames that your camera captures, per second. Frame rate comes in a few different standards (expressed as frames per second or fps): 24fps, 25fps, 30fps, 60fps, and 120fps. Frame rate stems from film and the very first silent films.

When you produce video for television, it's best to stick between 24 and 30fps. This ensures that your videos look realistic and fit what people expect from broadcast television. Live broadcasts, such as news and sports, are almost always shot at 30fps, whereas TV shows and movies are usually shot at 24fps.
