What movies do you think should have stayed on the Sight & Sound list?
Starting in 1952, Sight & Sound has been compiling a list of the greatest films of all time. This list is compiled by critics, and then they rank the films accordingly. The list changes every 10 years. Over the decades, movies have jumped in the ranks and then also fallen off the list.
But in the updated list that came out in 2022, some former titles that were on the list have now missed the cut.
Here's a list of what used to be on the list and where they were ranked:
- The Godfather Part II (Used to be 31)
- Gertrud (Used to be 42)
- Raging Bull (Used to be 53)
- Touch of Evil (Used to be 57)
- La maman et la putain (Used to be 59)
- Wild Strawberries (Used to be 63)
- Pickpocket (Used to be 63)
- Rio Bravo (Used to be 63)
- L'Eclisse (Used to be 73)
- Le Enfants du paradis (Used to be 73)
- La Grande Illusion (Used to be 73)
- Nashville (Used to be 73)
- Chinatown (Used to be 73)
- The Magnificent Ambersons (Used to be 81)
- Lawrence of Arabia (Used to be 81)
- Fanny and Alexander (Used to be 81)
- The Colour Of Pomegranates (Used to be 84)
- Greed (Used to be 84)
- The Wild Bunch (Used to be 84)
- Partie de champagne (Used to be 90)
- Aguirre, Wrath of God (Used to be 90)
- The Seventh Seal (Used to be 93)
- Un chien andakou (Used to be 93)
- Intolerance (Used to be 93)
- The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (Used to be 93)
So what do we think of all of this? Personally, I cannot believe that Chinatown and Lawrence of Arabia didn't make the cut. They feel like incredibly important movies that are the best in their genres as well.
